Easter egg hunt for visually impaired

16 A few years ago, the Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce held an extremely cool EASTER EGG HUNT for visually impaired children that garnered widespread media coverage, thanks to the irresistible images of the kids searching for “beeping” eggs. What egg hunts, races or prize giveaways can you adpot this month?

1 PRESYBYOPIA AWARENESS MONTH. For a condition that sooner or later affects everyone, there are a lot of misconceptions about presbyopia (aka short-arm syndrome). No, it’s not a disease. Yes, you can get it as early as your 30s. No, you aren’t condemned to wearing bifocals. Put together a list of your own “8 Misconceptions about Presbyopia” and send it to your local newspaper or town magazine, along with a range of solutions you offer to deal with the condition.

1 Each year, an estimated 100,000 Americans are hurt by sports-related eye injuries. About 13,500 of these injuries result in permanent vision loss. In support of SPORTS EYE SAFETY MONTH, send a bulletin to your clients reminding them that a majority of sports-related eye injuries can be avoided by wearing the proper protection.

4 Today, NATIONAL EQUAL PAY DAY, symbolizes how far into 2017 women had to work to earn what men earned in 2016. Invite your female customers in to commiserate and reward themselves “fairly” for their hard work — perhaps with some of your latest fashion glasses.

17 The BOSTON MARATHON, which takes place today, kicks off running season around the country with fun runs scheduled throughout the cool spring months. Such events are a great way to build rapport with staff and even patients. Dr. Dawn Arnold’s practice in Union, NJ, regularly participates in such team events. “I designed t-shirts with a slogan for our mud run and lots of patients would ask about it,” says office manager Tuli Santiago. The clients who missed out were really disappointed.

29 It’s our hunch NATIONAL ARBOR DAY is going to get bigger as out planet gets warmer. Break out the trowel and get in on the action now. Forget those 10 percent discounts. Offer to plant a sapling for every purchase made. Make it a part of your store’s contribution to NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK, which starts on the 23rd.

30 In the 50-odd years since President John F. Kennedy approved NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS WEEK, it’s never been cooler to operate a small business. America appreciates the benefits of diversification, localization and the Main Street values that businesses bring to their communities. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce or SCORE chapter to see what they have planned for Small Business Week.

CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY OF THE MONTH

Happy 80th to Jack Nicholson!

April 22, 1937 “With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60.” He’s now fat and 80 (on April 22) but there are still few actors who look as cool in sunglasses. Nicholson once told Esquire that the Middle American in him may think it’s a bit affected to wear sunglasses all the time, “but once you’ve experienced negative territory in public life, you begin to accept the notion of shields.”
