Other diabetes medications were not shown to be as effective.

A study presented at last week’s annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology showed significant effectiveness in the diabetes drug metformin in reducing the hazard of open-angle glaucoma. Julia E. Richards, M.D., of the University of Michigan-Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor, reported a reduction of 25 percent over a two-year period. Other diabetes medications were not shown to be as effective in averting glaucoma.
