Dr. Alvin Levin, who served as the 58th president of the American Optometric Association, has died.
He was 89.
Levin was an "optometric leader and advocate" who is being remembered "for an enduring passion toward his work and family, and his endearing sense of humor," according to AOA.
He made contributions to the field in Pennsylvania and Arizona, according to the organization. Most recently he lived in Rhode Island.
Levin, who practiced in Carlisle and Dillsburg, PA, for 30 years, was named AOA president in 1979. He was honored as the Pennsylvania Optometric Association's Central "Man of the Year" award in 1962 and the association's Optometrist of the Year in 1982.
He served as Arizona Optometric Association executive director from 1984 until 1999. He was named Arizona Optometrist of the Year in 1999 and received the AZOA's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
