Canadian Optometrists Warning Against Online Eyeglass Purchases

One study says the public is “not well served.”

With online purchases of eyewear growing as rapidly north of the border as in the U.S., Canadian optometrists are raising concerns about a lack of oversight linked to online glasses, and warn that eyewear that is manufactured or fitted improperly could lead to eyestrain, double vision, or headaches.
Optometrists say a number of online vendors are not following the same checks and balances that a licensed professional would follow. “Hopefully (the glasses) fit. Hopefully there’s an accurate prescription, but those are questions that are not always being answered,” said Dr. Paul Geneau, president of the Canadian Association of Optometrists, who cites a recent study concluding that “The public is not well served by online ordering sites for prescription glasses.”
