Is This the Biggest Issue in Optometry Right Now?

“We will have to stand up and fight together.”

Optometrist Scot Morris says the key issue in his profession at the moment is legislation related to contact lenses.

Healio reports that he served as moderator for a contact lens industry panel at Vision Expo West in Las Vegas.

Morris said: “We will have to stand up and fight together or this part of our industry will change dramatically.”

The American Optometric Association reported in April on legislation introduced by Republican U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy “to crack down on internet sales tactics and schemes that deceive the public, risk patient health and add to health care costs.” The association explained that the legislation included “new patient safety requirements and increased accountability for the internet contact lens sales industry.”

At the Vision Expo West panel, Peter Menziuso, president, North America, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc., said his company is “absolutely advocating for that doctor-patient relationship.” According to Healio, he added that it “will continue to support the Cassidy bill and other legislation to ensure that relationship remains.”
