Optometry College to Build Clinic Focused on ‘Narrative Medicine’

It will be “our first truly inter-professional clinic.”

The Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN, is seeking to build a clinic that one official says will be “our first truly inter-professional clinic.”

Work on the second-floor clinic within Crosstown Concourse is expected to cost $1.1 million, the Commercial Appeal reports. Dr. James Venable, vice president for clinical programs at the college, says optometry professionals will work with a variety of other health care providers, from family practice physicians to nutritionists and pharmacists.

He adds that the 8,000-square-foot clinic will use a patient-center approach called “narrative medicine.” In talking to patients, providers might make statements such as "Tell me more about what you do with your eyes on daily basis,” according to the newspaper.
