The Essilor Vision Foundation has announced the donation of one million pairs of glasses to people in need around the U.S. since it began operating in 2007. To celebrate, they’ve launched the year-long “One Million Magic Moments” campaign (watch the video here: invisionmag.com/021903). There are several ways ECPs can help: the Changing Life through Lenses program, a no-cost, in-kind donation of lenses and lab services for any practicing OD; apply for an Optometry Cares Healthy Eyes Healthy Children Community Grant; and the See Kids Soar in-office donation campaign. Quality Denim, Quality Frames

Safilo and Levi Strauss & Co have announced a multi-year global licensing agreement for the design, manufacture and distribution of Levi’s branded eyewear. Smart Ways To Sell Eyewear for Winter Sports

For us, eyewear for winter sports is a growing category. We design and manufacture our own prescription insert that fits into any ski goggle. We sell this complete insert mounted to an Rx lens direct to the consumer or through the 3Os channel. Smith sells an interesting concept with its optical ODS adapter system that fits inside a goggle and most brands manufacture goggles that fit over glasses. I think the Anon M4 Cylindrical goggle is the best. Fogging is constantly an issue for people in the winter, so we recommend putting a good anti-fog coating on an Rx insert. Color enhancing lenses, like ChromaPop from Smith and Prizm from Oakley, work like magic on the snow by offering clarity and contrast to skiers.

Our doctors are avid skiers, so they generally talk to the patient about skiing when they’re in the room with them. This is helpful and offers a seamless transition for us to get them what they need. Many of our patients see all types of sports eyewear when they’re on the slopes so they’re already aware of what they want when they come in. We stock all types of brands – Smith goggles, Zeal goggles, Maui Jim and Oakley. Zeal, Bollé and Smith have designed an insert that goes behind the ski goggle and Smith offers a turbo fan option to prevent fogging. If the patient doesn’t want a goggle, then they may like the idea of a prescription sunglass that works for both skiing and regular wear.

Those numbers are projected to see a 63 percent increase to 13.2 million by 2050. CDC Finds Bad CL Habits

The Centers for Disease Control’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found only a third of CL-wearing adults recalled hearing any wear and care recommendations from their ECP, despite providers reporting they shared all nine contact lens recommendations at initial visits, check-ups and complication-related visits. In AOA’s survey of practicing eyecare providers, doctors reported sharing all nine recommendations regularly, but most frequently when patients present with a CL-related complication. To help bridge the communication gap, AOA developed a resource for ODs and their CL teams emphasizing the ‘teach-back’ method. aoa.org
