There is a lot of talk about finding your “Why.” For Dr. Melissa McCulley that “why” involves paint. “The main reason I left my ophthalmology clinic job in 2005 is because they wouldn’t let me paint my office walls,” she shared. “Now I get to choose the color! Details like the paint color, music, and scent are all things that matter to me. I think of my office as an extension of my home… patients are my guests, and I host them in the finest way.” It doesn’t hurt that she also loves solving her patients’ visual needs — “They come to me with questions or problems and I like telling them what to do to make things better!” — and styling them in perfect eyewear — “I still jump into the optical any time I can.” Of course, she laments the constant patient insurance questions and the fact that business ownership leads to occasional insomnia, but when she needs to unwind the formula is simple: “A great hug from my husband, a big glass of wine, watching Wheel of Fortune, and then a jacuzzi!”
