A Vancouver optometrist who started a school in Kabul was one of two Canadians killed in a hotel attack last week in Afghanistan. With her husband, an ophthalmologist, Roshan Thomas first provided eye care and surgery in refugee camps in Karachi, then moved to Kabul to open to open the Sparks Academy in 2003. The Uganda-born Thomas — who had three adult children — was going to be a grandmother for the first time when she was among nine people gunned down by four teenagers in a hotel restaurant.
