Costa Re-Launches Rx Lab Program with New Lens Technologies

Costa announces the re-launch of its Rx lab program with the addition and expansion of several new lens technologies, including the C-SCAPE Bifocal.

It’s the first Rx sun lens of its kind to offer a backside round segment with Waypoint digital compensation, producing a blended line unseen from the front surface of the lens.

Other new offerings in the program include the Varilux Stylistic design progressive lens customized in Costa’s 580 technology, and the addition of a polycarbonate option for its 580P and 400P Rx family of lenses.

The company has invested heavily in its in-house state-of-the-art Rx lab. Costa developed the C-SCAPE Bifocal lenses with a backside round segment for the mature wearer who wants simple magnification for close-up tasks like reading outdoors or tying a fly. Through Costa’s Waypoint digital processing, the C-SCAPE Bifocal features a blended line on the lens back surface, and ensures an exceptional distance viewing field.

“The blended line means you can now wear a bifocal lens, without everyone knowing you’re wearing a bifocal lens,” said Chas MacDonald, president of Costa. “Our C-SCAPE design gives wearers an increased field of distance, perfect for outdoor adventurers who want to see more of the world around them.”

The Varilux Stylistic progressive lens design will now complement Costa’s C-SCAPE PAL design, and accommodate patients with a greater demand for a wider near field of vision. The offering produces Costa’s clearest progressive sunglasses packed with a “forget-they’re-on” frame fit, enhanced distance vision and superior image recognition across the entirety of the lens.

Also new to the Costa Rx lab program is the addition of a polycarbonate lens option to its line of 580P and 400P lenses. Costa is known for its 580 lens technology, which selectively filters out harsh yellow and harmful high-energy ultraviolet blue light. Filtering yellow light enhances reds, blues and greens, and produces better contrast and definition while reducing glare and eye fatigue. Absorbing high-energy blue light cuts haze, producing greater visual clarity and sharpness.

“These new lens technologies are major enhancements to our Rx lab program, and we continue to grow all facets of our Rx business,” said MacDonald. “What you’re seeing now with the re-launch of our Rx lab is just the tip of the iceberg.  There’s a lot more to come.”

Costa plans to roll out details about its Rx lab expansion to eye care practitioners (ECPs) and media at Vision Expo West in Las Vegas Sept. 17 –19 in booth #16106.

Costa’s Director of Rx Sales, Renato Cappuccitti, will also host an hour-long seminar on  Fri., Sept. 18 , from  4 – 5 p.m. PST  in the Medical & Science Theatre at Vision Expo West for all show attendees. The seminar, entitled “Sunglasses and the Science of Light,” will focus on how invisible and visible light waves are managed through sun lenses to enhance a patient’s vision.

SUNY Optometry Recognizes Partnership with Veterans Affairs Hospitals and Health Centers

College offers externship and residency program.

(PRESS RELEASE) NEW YORK – With a commitment to providing access as well as serving a growing and diverse population, SUNY College of Optometry commemorates Veterans Day by honoring its longstanding partnerships with 17 Veterans Affairs (VA) health care centers and military hospitals across the United States. Through the College’s externship and residency program, students and residents participate in programs that give them first-hand exposure to the distinctive needs of both retired and active military personnel.

These programs bring critical eye and vision care services to the community while creating the exposure and understanding of the unique needs of the U.S. military that are critical to future innovations and policies. Services include comprehensive eye exams, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, rehabilitation for traumatic brain injury (TBI), and low vision rehabilitation. Currently, SUNY Optometry alumni serve as externship and residency site supervisors at nine of the 17 affiliated VA hospitals and health centers.

“As health care providers, understanding the needs of the populations we serve is critical to providing the best care possible. Eye and vision related services are essential for retired and active members of our military who often are, or were, required to function in extreme circumstances, and heavily relied on their vision to achieve their missions,” said SUNY Optometry President David Heath, OD, EdM.

SUNY College of Optometry’s class of 2023 student and U.S. Navy Lieutenant, Michelle Kim said: “When I was applying to college, I knew that I wanted to become a doctor, but I felt like I didn’t understand what was going on in the world. Unexpectedly, I felt a growing sense of urgency to serve and take an active role in securing the freedoms the government promises through the military, so I decided to apply to the ROTC program. Having a deployment under my belt opened my eyes to the lack of availability of eye care, not just for people in underserved areas, but also for our deployed service members. They have different visual demands than most civilians; not having color blindness is pivotal for driving the ship at night, contact lenses and glasses are not readily available in the middle of the ocean, and lack of clear vision has potentially lethal ramifications in regards to shooting weapons, driving the ship, spotting friendly or enemy vessels, and even scanning the radars and screens.”

Platinum ABB Cares Grant of $5,000

  • BIO Girls
    The mission of Fargo, North Dakota-based BIO Girls, nominated by McCulley Optix Gallery, is to improve the self-esteem of adolescent girls through empowerment of self and service to others. The organization will receive a $5,000 ABB Cares grant to help provide journals, which are utilized to support life-skill development, to more than 2,000 girls in 2020.

Gold ABB Cares Grants of $2,500

  • Lakeshore Food 4 Kids
    The mission of Lakeshore Food 4 Kids, located in Ludington, Michigan, and nominated by West Shore Eye Care, is to provide meals for elementary school students that may be facing food insecurity issues, in the Ludington area school district. Lakeshore Food 4 Kids will receive a $2,500 ABB Cares grant to continue filling weekend food bags handed out to under-served students.
  • Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge
    Nominated by Apple Valley Eyecare, Minneapolis-based Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge is dedicated to assisting teens and adults in gaining freedom from drug and alcohol addictions and other life controlling problems by addressing their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

    The organization will receive a $2,500 ABB Cares grant to fund the Minnesota Adult and Teen College Scholarship Program.

Silver ABB Cares Grants of $1,000

  • It’s a Sensory World
    Nominated by Dr. David E. Weber, Farmers Branch, Texas-based It’s a Sensory World is devoted to serving children with special needs with customized sensory-based programs to maximize developmental potential leading to the independence and inclusion of each child. The $1,000 ABB Cares grant will fund new therapeutic classroom materials and sensory gym equipment.
  • Sandy Feet Initiative
    Mission Viejo, California-based Sandy Feet Initiative, nominated by Griffin Optometric Group, is devoted to empowering the siblings of children with special needs through beach-oriented programs. Sandy Feet Initiative will receive a $1,000 ABB Cares grant to fund additional staff and equipment.
  • The Camphill School
    The Camphill School, located in Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, and nominated by Eagle Eye Associates, provides programs for children and youth with developmental disabilities so that they may be better understood, reach their potential and meaningfully participate in life. The Camphill School will receive a $1,000 ABB Cares grant to support families who need financial aid.
  • Vision is Priceless
    Jacksonville, Florida-based Vision is Priceless, nominated by Levenson Eye Associates, is dedicated to providing access to quality, free preventative vision healthcare including free vision screenings, eye exams, surgeries and glasses for the underserved. The non-profit organization will receive a $1,000 ABB Cares grant that will benefit the Gift of Sight Program, which is helping to restore sight to those in need in Jacksonville.
