OUTREACH Summer is always a good time for in-person outreach. Going to retirement homes to give talks on eyecare or doing a pop-up at a street fair get you out of the store and meeting potential customers.

INVENTORY Back to school … Back to normal? The new school term opens in a few weeks. That’s as good a sign of a return to full normalcy as any. Will you be ready? Run a final check on inventory and staffing to ensure it’s sufficient and the team is focused on making business happen.

EVENT PLANNING Start making plans for a fall event – maybe a Girls’ Night Out or an indie trunk show. Preliminary planning includes which frame reps to invite and working on a PR strategy.

Jul. 11-17

MANAGEMENT Install a mood board in your break room to keep positive energy up. Invite everyone to attach a note of a positive interaction they had with another team member this week. When people at work see it, it will improve attitudes and help provide super-friendly and helpful service.

FURNISHINGS Need new office furniture? Now is the time to pick some up; showrooms are making room for new lines that come out in August.

Jul. 18-24

MANAGEMENT Can’t get away this summer? Combine work with a break from the store. Head to a neighboring city to see how they sell eyewear there.

IN-STORE Review your store’s traffic patterns. Ask friends or relatives to walk through your optical taking photos of anything that catches their eye. These shots will identify points of attraction and dead space and show how people move within your space.

MARKETING Sometimes the old ways are the best. Do a direct-mail of postcards to increase exam revenue in the (usually slow) months ahead.

Jul. 25-31

IN-STORE Are your walls a little bland? Consider coordinating with local painters or an art school to host new, original artwork. You can also search Etsy by location to spot nearby talent.
