Ophthalmologist turned politician warns against government interference.
U.S. Senator Rand Paul (KY, Rep.), who got his MD in ophthalmology from Duke University, returned to his professional roots for an appearance recently at a gathering of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Paul, a member of the Tea Party movement, warned of government interference in the pricing and delivery of health care. “Every time a Washington bureaucrat sets a price, consumers suffer,” he said. “If you set the price of cataract surgery too low — let’s say, free — the demand will be infinite and there will be shortages of cataract surgeons and cataract surgeries. The only way to sort this out is by making patients wait in line.”
