The Growing Market for Supplements that Boost Ocular Heath and Functioning

Most nutraceuticals are sold online or over-the-counter but more and more patients are asking for specific recommendations from their optometrist.

RESEARCH HAS SHOWN that nutraceuticals or supplements can increase macular pigment optical density and help alleviate headaches and eye fatigue. Based on doctor feedback and increased consumer concerns around vision symptoms from device usage, EyePromise developed Screen Shield Teen, an all-natural zeaxanthin fruit-punch flavored chewable vitamin for children ages 4 and up. As with other ocular supplements, it is meant to be taken in conjunction with a daily multi-vitamin. Most nutraceuticals are sold online or over-the-counter but more and more patients are asking for specific recommendations from their optometrist.

Smart Ways To Sell Nutraceuticals

Dr. Rishi Singh, Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland, Clinic, Cleveland, OH

Data overwhelmingly support nutraceuticals for patients with Category 3 age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and category four AMD in one eye. Patients should take vitamins to reduce their conversion to AMD because studies show they can result in a 35-40% reduction over a five-year period which is significant. It’s not hard to persuade patients to buy these because they are on sale everywhere, at stores like Costco and Walmart. We direct them to the right type of vitamin for their eyes and I usually recommend Bausch + Lomb’s Preservision Areds eye vitamin in addition to a senior multivitamin. I suggest they connect with their pharmacist to get the right components for them based on cost and availability.

Dr. Louise Sclafani, Solo Eyecare and Gallery, Chicago and Illinois College of Optometry

Studies have shown that over-the-counter nutraceuticals that contain lutein and zeaxanthin can reduce symptoms like fatigue, contrast sensitivity and glare disability. They can improve visual temporal processing and help build up macular pigments to improve memory and verbal fluency. Since we don’t sell these vitamins in the practice, we recommend patients purchase them online. I suggest they buy the EyePromise family of products. They sell vitamins for geriatrics, sports vision, dry eye and screen time. We don’t yet know the damage of all this screen time on young eyes as many kids suffer from eyestrain, headaches and sleeping problems. I recommend EyePromise’s Screen Shield Teen.

For These 9 Styles the Temples Make the Frame

They have us rethinking coming at them sideways.

Five acetate beads on each temple define the CE167S, while the oval lenses and metal rims add to its character. Temple tips are accented with Chloé’s signature teardrop cutout.

Sometimes a tort temple with true depth makes all the difference. The acetate Sun 12 scores a geometric victory by combining its round frame front with a distinct angle on each temple.

Miu Miu

An acetate-and-metal combination frame, the MU02VS makes its mark with decidedly curved temples, a double bridge, and glitter-infused fronts and temple tips.

The 7152/S, a women’s metal frame with wrapping lens, includes the option of adding crystals. The eye-catching, curved temples include the Givenchy logo on the round tips, adding to the standout features of this style.

Stella McCartney

What’s in a name? When it comes to the SC0210S, pretty much everything. This bio-acetate style’s temples say it all and make perfect sense for those with a hankering for sparkle.

Made with hand-layered, sustainably sourced wood, the Ontario turns heads with its return-to-nature sensibility. A look inside the temples reveals the quote “Don’t forget your roots.”

There’s no guesswork needed when it comes to the metal GU7645, which makes itself known with a bold GUESS logo on both temples.

(800) 345-8482,

Betsey Johnson

Giving the temples a frame-front level of priority, polka dots rendezvous with flowers on the arms of the Soul Sister.

(800) 414-7656,

Vera Wang

A full acetate cat eye, the Dasnee ups anyone’s bling factor with a delightful cluster of Swarovski crystals on each temple.

Vision Expo Gets an Update and More of What You Need to Know for January

Including a resource for women patients with Traumatic Brain Injuries and a new license for luxury car lovers.

Marcolin Group and BMW Group have signed an exclusive worldwide licensing agreement for the design, production and distribution of sunglasses and eyeglasses for BMW, BMW M and BMW M Motorsport labels. Vision Expo Reimagined

The Vision Council has reimagined Vision Expo for 2020. With the show’s co-owner, Reed Exhibitions, they will focus on discovery, connection and experience. Refreshed branding, including redesigned logos and tagline — “The Future, Clearly” — along with curated neighborhoods that “optimize the connection between sellers and buyers” will make their debut at the Javits Center in NYC from March 26–29. The first phase will debut three new neighborhoods: The River for design-driven artisanal products, The Union for boutique and premium independent brands, and The Springs, an incubator zone for emerging talent.

Concussions and Women

Little is known about the effects of traumatic brain injuries, such as concussions, on women, because the majority of studies have focused on men. However, one study shows that women athletes are 50 percent more likely than male athletes to have a sports-related concussion. Unfortunately, regardless of gender, for most concussion patients, visual problems are often overlooked during the initial evaluation. To address this, the non-profit NORA and PINK Concussions has developed a new educational resource, “Women and Concussions,” that provides some helpful information on why concussions might affect women differently than men.
