Even at 92, Optician Starts Work at Dawn

Orville Swett says volunteer work keeps him alive.

At 92, “retired” optician and disabled World War II infantryman Orville Swett has logged more than 38,000 volunteer hours providing optical services to other vets in and around Daytona Beach, FL. Swett, who starts his workday at dawn, owned an optical shop in Maine before retiring to Florida in 1985, and has maintained his volunteer practice ever since. “This has done more for me than I have done for the vets,” he says. “It helped keep me alive. It keeps me going.”
