Sightsavers has been named as one of seven “top charities” by San Francisco-based charity evaluator GiveWell for its work on treating children for parasitic infections, a process also known as deworming. The elimination and control of five neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), some of which cause severe disfigurement and disability, is a core part of Sightsavers’ work in 24 sub-Saharan African countries. Sightsavers explains that it’s “being recommended by GiveWell to scale up our deworming programmes to distribute treatment for schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths (STH), as part of our integrated NTD programmes in a number of Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria and Guinea Bissau.” Sightsavers notes that it was recognized by GiveWell for offering deworming programs that have a “strong track record and excellent cost-effectiveness” and for maintaining a record of transparency. It operates in the U.S. as Sightsavers Inc., a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. The group states on its website: “We work in more than 30 countries to eliminate avoidable blindness and support people with visual impairments to live independently.” Read more from Sightsavers Advertisement Read more from GiveWell Related Topics:charity click to Comment(Comment) Up Next Bausch & Lomb Should Stop Making Certain Claims, Ad Monitor Says Don't Miss Eyecare Software Firm Gets $45M from Investors SPONSORED VIDEO Crizal® Sapphire™ HR: Invisible Shield of Protection Your patients’ main concerns of anti-glare, scratch resistance, and easiness to clean are covered.
