Giving Sight “Sounds Awesome” to Pilot Turned Optometry Student

His brother’s death inspired Ed Woodward to attend medical school.

Ed Woodward was just five flights shy of becoming an Air Force fighter pilot when he suffered a stroke while flying. The condition put an end to his military career, but not before he was awarded a Tillman Scholarship, given to active or retired service members and their spouses. Uncertain at first of what to study, Woodward decided to pursue a career in medicine, following the plans of twin brother Gene, who was killed by a drunk driver during his first year in med school. Woodward is now in his own first year at the University of South Florida, but has already made up his mind that he wants to practice optometry. “To be able to give sight on a day-to-day basis sounds pretty awesome to me,” he says.
