Golden Opportunity Award Opens 2024-2025 Application Period to Support Emerging Optometrists

(PRESS RELEASE) ST. LOUIS, MO — The AOA Foundation, in collaboration with PERC Alliance, announced the second annual Golden Opportunity Award, an initiative that continues to honor the legacy of Dr. David Golden by providing substantial support to emerging optometric professionals. From Oct. 16, 2024, through Jan. 15, 2025, applications will be accepted for this distinguished award, which aims to empower up to three deserving optometrists with $50,000 each to help establish their first independent practice.

Last year’s inaugural Golden Opportunity Award celebrated three exceptional optometrists, each recognized for their commitment to enhancing eye care in underserved communities and advancing the profession. Dr. Alyssa Putman of Elmira, New York, used her award to integrate new technologies and provide free clinics to those in need. Dr. Melissa Macco of Reno, Nevada, leveraged the funds to expand access to care for the Latino community through her new practice. Dr. Rebecca Chown of Hood River, Oregon, focused on developing a mobile vision clinic to serve rural and Native American populations. These remarkable individuals exemplify the transformative impact of the Golden Opportunity Award on both the recipients and the communities they serve.

Dr. David Golden, a revered figure in optometry, was known for his dedication to excellence and his passion for fostering the growth of future optometric leaders. The Golden Opportunity Award continues his legacy by supporting optometrists who represent underrepresented groups within the profession or who are committed to establishing practices in underserved areas. This initiative is pivotal in promoting a more diverse and equitable landscape in the field of optometry.

“We are proud to continue the Golden Opportunity Award in partnership with the American Optometric Association (AOA), The AOA Foundation, and the Golden Family,” said Dr. Jason Lake, General Manager of PERC Alliance. “This award not only honors Dr. Golden’s legacy but also provides crucial support for optometrists aspiring to own independent practices, a goal he held dear.”

Applications for the 2024-2025 Golden Opportunity Award are now open. Eligible candidates are encouraged to apply by Jan. 15, 2025. To learn more about the award and application requirements, please visit here.
