IAPB Rallies the Sight Sector to Prioritize Child Eye Health Ahead of World Sight Day

(PRESS RELEASE) With a week to go till World Sight Day, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) is urging everyone in the sight sector to stand up for child eye health.

This year, World Sight Day is on Thursday 10th October and will focus the world’s attention on the importance of eye health in young people and inspire children everywhere to love their eyes. IAPB aims to gather over a million pledges to prioritise the eye health of children and invites children around the world to shake the stigma of glasses by flexing their creative muscles in the Glasses of the Future competition.

Speaking a week ahead of World Sight Day, IAPB spokesperson Simon Darvill said, “Everyone in the sight sector knows that a simple intervention like glasses can be the difference between a child struggling or thriving at school. On World Sight Day we must work together to make sure that everyone knows how important it is for children to get a sight test and the treatment they need.”

“Together with over 250 members around the world, IAPB is campaigning for governments to act on accessible and affordable eye care for every child. Each year the support for World Sight Day continues to grow, and our collective voice becomes louder. This year we need to continue this effort to make sure that more people are taking notice and loving their eyes.”

World Sight Day and the Love Your Eyes campaign serves as an important reminder that eye care is not reserved for a select few, but for all children globally. IAPB is asking for child eye health screenings to happen around the world, so children will have their eyes checked in celebration of World Sight Day.

Eye care organizations are invited to get involved by submitting a child eye health pledge on behalf of their young patients at www.iapb.world/world-sight-day. On the campaign website, visitors can also find details of the Glasses of the Future competition, activity sheets for kids and eye health care tips for parents and careers.
