International brands are gearing up to satisfy demand.
Representatives of various international eyewear brands at a recent optical show in the United Kingdom were reporting a large increase in demand for fashionable frames for children and young teens. Peter Beaumont, director of UK frame distributor Dunelm said between 15 and 20 per cent its total sales were children’s frames and that there had been a significant increase over the last 10 years — more than five percent last year alone. “The market for children’s eyewear is being driven by the children themselves,” said Barry Dibble, chairman of the Federation of Manufacturing Opticians. “They want access to the same modern, fashionable eyewear as their parents.” A number of manufacturers are showing lines specifically designed for young consumers.
