Latinos En Optometry Launches

Latinos En Optometry (LEO) has launched to support Latinos in eyecare and those who serve Latino communities and is currently enlisting members and sponsors while planning events and engagement in the year ahead. Diana Canto-Sims, OD, CEO and founder of La Vida Eyewear and co-owner of Buena Vista Optical in Chicago, and Lawrence Chavez, founder and CEO of EveryDay Contacts, Inc., founded the non-profit LEO in 2021 to be a conduit between the Latino community and the eyecare industry and to provide continuing education to all of optometry. According to the National Eye Institute, the Latino population has some of the highest rates of vision loss and blindness caused by eye diseases.

Sunys Join Forces

Two State University of New York campuses have joined forces to improve access to health care through growing the number of eye doctors in Central and Western New York. The partnership between SUNY College of Optometry and SUNY Upstate Medical University creates an optometry campus extension program offering a doctorate of optometry degree, collaborative vision research, access to eyecare, and economic opportunities in central New York. This addresses the critical need for more ODs in the region and provides a more affordable option for aspiring ECPs. As the SUNY College of Optometry is the only school of optometry in New York State this partnership offers a potentially more affordable option for students.

According to The Insight Partners, “Vision Care Market Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Global Forecast to 2028” report the global vision care market’s size expected to grow from $74.11B in 2022 to $98.96B by 2028. The U.S. holds a significant share of the vision care market and its growth is primarily driven by the increasing prevalence of eye diseases and the aging population likely to favor the adoption of vision care products. This population (aged 65 and above) is estimated to double from 52M in 2018 to ~95M by 2060, with the group’s share of the total population increasing from 16% to 23%.
