Lawmakers Want to Undo State’s Ban on Online Eyewear Prescriptions

A law being proposed in Indiana would undo the state’s ban on online prescribing of eyeglasses and contact lenses.

Such prescription are forbidden under a law passed in 2016, Indiana Public Media reports. Indiana is one of the states where Opternative, a Chicago-based online eye exam company, has stopped doing business.

Legislators supporting the new bill in Indiana say their goal is to increase access to eyecare.

“We all know that we have an access to healthcare services problem in Indiana,” said Rep. Cindy Kirchhofer, a Republican from Indianapolis, according to Indiana Public Media.

But optometrists have spoken against the concept of online eye exams and prescriptions, arguing that it’s not safe.

Dr. Brad Sutton was quoted saying he’s seen many patients who “have sat in the chair thinking all they wanted was a pair of glasses or to renew their contact lens prescription and we find something very significant and deal with it.”
