(PRESS RELEASE) NEW YORK — Lighthouse Guild announced it has received a $100,000 grant from the Frances G. Scaife Foundation to expand its ability to provide essential technology skills and assistive technology training for people who are visually impaired. With this generous contribution Lighthouse Guild will launch the Frannie Scaife Tech Training Initiative, utilizing its expertise to help more individuals gain the tools they need to succeed.
For over 25 years, Lighthouse Guild has helped level the playing field for people with vision loss by training adults and children to make the most of the latest assistive technologies as well as to enhance their use of existing tools. Through its Tech Center, Research Department and “On Tech and Vision” podcast, Lighthouse Guild is exploring advancements in artificial intelligence, facial recognition, and programmed learning – technologies that have the potential to empower people who are visually impaired like never before.
“Technology offers numerous resources to help people who are blind or visually impaired maintain their independence, achieve their goals, and connect meaningfully with others. However, its effectiveness relies heavily on the training and support provided,” said Dr. Calvin Roberts, President and CEO of Lighthouse Guild. “We are profoundly grateful to the Frances G. Scaife Foundation for this support.”
This investment, along with support from the New York State Commission for the Blind (NYSCB) and funding from organizations like the Lavelle Fund for the Blind, will have a transformative impact. The initiative will provide one-on-one training—both in-person and remote—to serve visually impaired individuals beyond the New York City area. Additionally, it will offer group sessions and special workshops focused on essential assistive technology skills.
