Facebook is working with Luxottica to develop a pair of smart glasses, CNBC reports.

Facebook has been working on augmented reality glasses for a couple of years but has not been able to get the project off the brand. With Luxottica’s help, it’s hoping to launch the product between 2023 and 2025, according to CNBC, which cited “people familiar” with the work.

The glasses would be intended to disrupt the smartphone market. Zacks reports that the idea is to “allow users of the smart glasses to take calls, livestream on social media and many other such features that are intended to replace smartphones.”

The project is reportedly code-named Orion.

Facebook is said to be working on other technology to go with the glasses, including a ring to be used as an input device — it would have motion detection capabilities.

With the smart glasses project, Facebook appears to be “raising its efforts to withstand the intense competition in the next-generation glasses space from Snap, Google, Microsoft and Apple,” according to Zacks.
