Did he really think this would work?

Retail thieves are apparently getting more creative with their getaway plans. Not that it’s doing them any good.

Police say a man in Natick, MA, lifted $2,100 of sunglasses from at least three stores in a mall — and then tried to get away in an Uber, the MetroWest Daily News reports.

It didn’t work so well. Police soon caught up with Miguel Chaves, and he allegedly had sunglasses from For Eyes Optical, Lenscrafters and Macy’s, according to the Daily News.

Chaves was a passenger in the car. Natick Mall’s security team had made note of the license plate number when they saw him flee.

Chaves, of East Boston, is now charged with “larceny of property worth more than $250, two counts of receiving stolen property worth more than $250 and possession of a device to remove theft prevention devices,” the publication reports.

At first, police detained the Uber driver, thinking he might be connected to the crime, according to the Daily News. But the driver was quickly released when they realized he had no role in the theft and was just doing his job.
