Eyewear Love Affair
EMERYVILLE, CA

The thought process behind Autianna Wilson’s business was rooted in creating an immersive eyewear experience centered around curiosity and wonder. Unlike traditional optical stores, which often prioritize quick sales over the deeper significance of selecting eyewear, she wanted to slow down the process. Drawing from over a decade in the optical industry, she envisioned a space dedicated to personalized, curated service. Opting to exclusively carry independent, handmade eyewear brands further underscores her commitment to uniqueness and originality.

Sergeant Bluff Eyecare
SERGEANT BLUFF, IA

Sergeant Bluff EyeCare has been a cornerstone of eye health in the Siouxland-area since 2007. As their reputation for unparalleled care spread, their patient base grew steadily. By 2015, their original office no longer accommodated the demand, prompting the realization of a new, state-of-the-art facility. The expansion allowed them to integrate cutting-edge technology and offer an extensive optical selection of over 1,500 frames and sunglasses. At Sergeant Bluff EyeCare, stagnation is not an option. Owner Dr. Benjamin Uhl’s philosophy underscores their relentless pursuit of innovation, rejecting complacency in favor of staying at the forefront of industry trends and advancements.

Sherman Optical
EDMONDS, WA

John Scheuerman founded Sherman Optical in 1939. An immigrant from Germany, John started as runner for Riggs Optical and went to optometry school while working for them. He later bought that Riggs Optical location and turned it into Sherman Optical, the Americanized spelling of the German “Scheuerman.” At one time six locations strong, today, a fourth generation Scheuerman — Mike Scheuerman — continues the tradition, running the single remaining location as an optician-owned store. Still offering a family-friendly feeling, the location boasts old pictures of prior locations and the people who once ran them.

Eye Lab
SCOTTSDALE, AZ

Dr. Serena Shao’s journey to realizing the dream of opening her own optometry practice began at age 13 when she was inspired by her own optometrist. This early inspiration set her on a path to pursue a career dedicated to helping people feel confident in their eyewear, educating them about preventive measures, and diagnosing diseases early on. Through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to providing exceptional care, Dr. Shao has not only achieved her childhood dream but has also created a unique and fulfilling practice that prioritizes the individual needs of her patients.

Astoria Vision
MCALLEN, TX

In 2004, Astoria Vision, an upscale boutique optical, was born out of a vision to deliver world-class customer service, high-end brands, and the most advanced equipment and technology in eyewear and eyecare to South Texas (a historically underserved area). Dr. Fiona Kolia’s endeavor was to create an institution that mirrored the legendary service standards set by the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Astoria Vision’s legacy is built on several “firsts” in the area, from introducing Optos retinal imaging to bringing in Zeiss’s exceptional lens technology and Maui Jim sunglasses and prescription eyewear; pioneering steps that reflect Dr. Kolia’s commitment to innovation and excellence.

Eye Designs
MAMARONECK, NY

This year, Eye Designs celebrates 40 years in New York. In 1984, Sharon Decker opened Eye Designs of Westchester. Just 25 years old at the time, she had spent time working in high end boutiques in Manhattan and didn’t see any reason why these trendy, upscale styles couldn’t find a home in Westchester. Eye Designs of Westchester, where residents could browse hundreds of Manhattan styles without traveling into the big city, was quickly welcomed into the community. In the subsequent years, Sharon and her son Harris have opened stores in the surrounding towns of Armonk and Mamaroneck. These locations deliver on the promise of only the best, always independent eyewear from around the world.

Dr. Scott Keating wanted to “dare to be different” in his optical. He had a vision to carry different unique eyewear from all over the world at a price level that matched the surrounding economy. His business exploded in growth from day one because customers were craving unique eyewear and top-notch customer service. VisionTrends does not hide frames in drawers but displays all 2,200 ophthalmic frames and 500 sunglasses in full view. Its four opticians, and several back-up staff who can help as frame stylists, are on hand so customers never feel overwhelmed but leave impressed by all the beautiful eyewear they didn’t even realize existed.
