The four-year-old boy got his purple glasses anyway – and he loves them.
When Kate Austin of Toronto took her four-year-old son Lyle shopping for glasses, “he was immediately drawn to the bright colors” and “was all over the pinks and the purples,” she told CBC. The radio station reports, however, that she encountered some resistance from a gender-stereotyping optician who told Lyle that the frames he liked were only for girls. The mother proceeded to tell the optician that she “thought it was the stupidest thing” she had ever heard, saying there was no such thing as frame colors for boys and frame colors for girls. But instead of backing off her position, the optician – in her seeming attempt to not make a sale – responded with what Austin called a “wave of hostility.”
For his part, wee Lyle carefully considered the optician’s argument, but ultimately rejected its premise and proudly walked out with a pair of purple eyeglasses.
