(PRESS RELEASE) BOSTON, MA — New England College of Optometry (NECO) announced its fourth annual Industry Collaborative, taking place on September 9–10, 2024, in Boston. Themed “Health Equity in Eye Care,” this event will bring together industry leaders, government officials, non-profit policymakers, educators, and students to engage in critical discussions on ensuring equitable access to high-quality eye care for all, regardless of socioeconomic or geographic factors.

Registration is now open for this multi-part program, and all relevant stakeholders are encouraged to participate. The event will foster diverse perspectives and collaborative dialogue aimed at advancing health equity in optometry.

Dr. Gary Chu, OD, MPH, FAAO, vice president of Professional Affairs at NECO, emphasized the importance of the Industry Collaborative. “This is a unique opportunity to tackle the pressing challenges of health equity and access to eye care in optometry,” he noted. “Innovations in optometry that impact patient care must reach all providers, regardless of their location.”

The event will kick off on Monday, September 9, at 3:30 p.m. at NECO’s main campus, 424 Beacon Street. Topics will include the role of artificial intelligence in optometric education, as well as a video presentation titled “A Day in the Life of a NECO Student,” showcasing student experiences in Boston and the challenges of a rigorous academic program.

On Tuesday, September 10, the event will move to Artists for Humanity, a creative hub for Boston youth, located at 100 West 2nd Street. Featured speakers include Dr. Richard Edlow, widely known as “The Eyeconomist,” who will discuss how data informs strategy development. A special panel featuring Dr. Jason Brenner, Dr. Curtis Ono, Dr. Diane Russo, Jeff San chez (former Chair of the Massachusetts House Ways & Means Committee), and Dr. Monica Vohra will lead a debate on the evolving scope of practice in optometry. The conference will conclude at 2:30pm.
