Lawsuit says the services he billed for weren’t medically necessary.

Optometrist Jeff Browen, owner of Advanced EyeCare in Sioux Falls, ND, will pay $151,528.89 as part of a settlement after being accused of overbilling his state’s Medicaid program, the Argus Leader reports. Specifically, the article says, he was accused of billing for tests that weren’t medically necessary and also billing for procedures that should have been billed under a less expensive code. Browen did not have to admit wrongdoing under the settlement.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley made the following statement in announcing the settlement: “We are working to protect taxpayer dollars by ensuring that providers submit claims for goods and services that are medically necessary. It is important to guard taxpayer monies by paying only legitimate claims.”
