They can cause ocular burns.

New research suggests that more children are suffering eye injuries related to a common household item: detergent pods.

The issue is ocular burns from the liquid inside the pods, Healio reports. 

In children ages 3 and 4 years, 1,201 such injuries were reported from 2010 to 2015, according to the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System.

The burns can happen when the children are holding the products and the liquid shoots into the eye. In some cases, children get the liquid on their hands and then touch their eyes, causing injury.

The research was reported in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology.
