About 1,000 square feet will be added.

Southern College of Optometry is planning a $1 million construction project at its building in the Memphis Medical District, the Memphis Business Journal reports.

The work involves a diner as well as study areas and lockers. About 1,000 square feet of usable space will be added by enclosing balcony areas, according to the publication.

The renovation and expansion is taking place on the fourth floor of the 11-floor structure.

The building was constructed in the 1970s.

Furniture in the diner will be replaced "with furnishings that can serve both dining and studying functions," according to the Business Journal.

Dr. Lewis Reich, president of the college, was quoted saying the project will "help facilitate community development and create a top-tier learning environment for our students."
