Five minutes, no waiting.

A group of Chicago investors will back wide-scale tests this month for an on-line eye examination developed by a local optometrist that takes 5-10 minutes to complete on any home computer and costs the consumer $35. Illinois O.D. Steven Lee, who has been working on the system since 2009, has teamed with Aaron Dallek and others to launch Opternative Inc., which intends to “revolutionize the way eye care is delivered in the U.S. and across the globe,” says Dallek. Following the current tests, Opternative hopes to eventually partner with the University of Chicago to conduct a double-blind study of its system’s accuracy compared with traditional refractory exams. The company hopes to have its online system available to the public this spring or summer.
