Eye doctor accused of negligence in 8-year-old boy’s death speaks in court.

Standing trial for gross negligence manslaughter in the death of 8-year-old Vincent Barker, British optometrist Honey Rose spoke in court and said that she’s “sure” she conducted a proper examination of Barker prior to his death, BBC reports. According to the news outlet, she also said she believes she was given the wrong retinal images to study. She reportedly told the jury: “If everything is normal, I don’t have to record it. It’s up to me. It’s the optometrist’s decision. I did all the tests I had to do. I didn’t miss anything.”

The prosecuting attorney argues that Barker’s death – which was caused by hydrocephalus (water on the brain) – could have been prevented had Rose “done her job properly.” He’s arguing that at the time of Barker’s eye exam, there were “obvious abnormalities” in both of his eyes, referring to photographs that were taken before Rose examined him.
