USV Optical Inc. intends to lay off 299 workers in Blackwood, NJ, according to a notice the company filed with the state.

The job cuts are expected to take place by the end of 2020, ROINJ reports. Among the positions are production, lab support and helpline workers.

Under the name U.S. Vision, the company operates as a manufacturer and supplier of eyeglasses.

The company explained its reasons in a WARN notice filed with the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development: “COVID-19 restrictions and the economic downturn as many of its key customers are major retailers who are experiencing significantly reduced store hours, foot traffic and sales.”

It’s “unclear if the company would remain in business in some fashion,” according to ROINJ.
