DENVER, CO – Rudy Project, Italian manufacturers of sunglasses, prescription eyewear and helmets, have partnered with James Caple and Cindy Way in their attempt to become the first-ever American pair to row successfully from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Dingle, Ireland. This historical endeavor, also referred to as the 1,000 Leagues Project, will be supported by Rudy Project’s performance and casual eyewear solutions throughout the 3,300 miles across the North Atlantic Ocean.
“Breaking records and making history is in our DNA,” says Paul Craig, president and co-founder of Rudy Project North America. “When we heard what Team 1,000 Leagues was setting out to accomplish, I knew it was an effort worth supporting. As the official eyewear of USRowing, and as a former competitive rower myself, I know the importance of high-quality gear when you’re out on the water. The weather and the sea may be unpredictable, but Cindy and James can trust Rudy Project won’t let them down.”
James’ interest in this excursion sparked in 2007 when he read an article about Guinness World Record Ocean Rower Roz Savage, who at the time was rowing across the Indian Ocean. When James met Cindy in 2013, he shared his dream with her, and Team 1,000 Leagues was born.
“I adore my Broomstyk glasses,” says Cindy. “And James thinks he looks super fly in his Spinhawks, all of which will accompany us on our expedition, along with several other amazing Rudy Project performance models such as the Rydon. Their polarized lenses are outstanding and cut the glare off water while still allowing us to clearly see our navigation LCD screens.”

Both James and Cindy will be utilizing performance sunglasses which feature Rudy Project’s ImpactX PhotoPolarized technology. This tech previously won Outside Magazine’s “Gear of the Year” and allows athletes to clearly read LCD screens such as GPS without distortion, while providing the same glare-cutting benefit polarized lenses provide.
The pair are now being mentored by James’ inspiration Roz Savage, who has spent months with the team discussing preparations and planning. The duo leaves for Cape Cod on May 14 and plans to give a presentation at Tabor Academy in Marion, MA on May 16. They will then wait for a 5-10 day weather window, which will allow them to escape the coast and reach the open ocean.
