Safilo Names Digital Transformation Director

He’ll lead the company’s e-commerce program.

(PRESS RELEASE) PADUA, ITALY – Eyewear company Safilo has appointed Andrea Bulgarelli as digital transformation director.

Bulgarelli will lead Safilo’s e-commerce program as part of the direct-to-consumer corporate strategy and will report to Angelo Trocchia, group CEO. He will be based in Padua.

“Digital is at the core of our growth and development strategy, we are therefore very happy that Andrea is joining our company,” said Trocchia. “With his leadership we can finally accelerate our e-commerce business, further substantiating our digital transformation. With his extensive experience in the fashion industry focusing on omni-channel retailing, brand digital identity and digital evangelization, we are now well set to implement our digital strategy, a key pillar of our 2020 Plan.”

Bulgarelli led the digital processes for the creation of the international e-commerce websites for Max Mara Group. More recently, at Benetton, he restructured the management of all consumer-facing touchpoints, developing the project into a digital hub.

CooperVision Expands Myopia Management Team

(PRESS RELEASE) PLEASANTON, CA — Responding to growing global interest in myopia management and its MiSight 1 day contact lenses, CooperVision’s Specialty EyeCare Division has named two eyecare-industry veterans to newly established professional services roles.

Elizabeth Lumb has been appointed as head of professional services, MiSight 1 day, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) and global brand manager for the lens. She joined the organization in 2013, serving as professional services training manager for Europe. Earlier in her career, she worked at Eurolens Research under the directorship of Professor Nathan Efron, conducting contact lens clinical research trials with findings presented at the American Academy of Optometry and BCLA conferences. Lumb was also a senior optometrist with Boots Opticians. She is based in the UK.

Chi Shing Fan, who led the test market introduction of MiSight in Hong Kong, has been appointed as professional service and commercial lead, MiSight & Specialty Business, Asia Pacific. He joined CooperVision in 2009, serving as professional services director, Asia Pacific and as the region’s frequent replacement category lead. Previously, he held regional professional services roles with Bausch + Lomb and CIBA Vision. Fan is based in Hong Kong.

The company has also recently appointed MiSight Professional Services leads for the UK, France and Iberia. It intends to staff similar roles in Germany-Austria-Switzerland, Hong Kong and Singapore, aiding the establishment of myopia management best practices in those markets.

CooperVision MiSight is the world’s first 1-day soft contact lens shown to substantially slow the progression of myopia in children. In a global multicenter study, it has been shown to reduce the progression of myopia by 59 percent (SE) and 53 percent (eye elongation) over three years when compared to a group of children wearing a single vision 1-day lens.

The prevalence of myopia is projected to increase from approximately two billion people worldwide in 2010 to almost 5 billion people in 20503, bringing with it near- and long-term health challenges. Not only does it create blurred vision, but also increases the likelihood of conditions later in life such as glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy if not addressed.

CooperVision Raises $262K+ for World Sight Day Challenge

It’s passed $1M in cumulative funds raised.

(PRESS RELEASE) PLEASANTON, CA — Following an employee fundraising campaign that eclipsed previous efforts, CooperVision has donated $262,000 to Optometry Giving Sight in support of the 2018 World Sight Day Challenge. The company has now surpassed the $1 million milestone in cumulative funds raised during the past seven years for the World Sight Day Challenge.

Employees increased year-over-year giving by more than 35 percent, supported by a matching commitment from the company. More than 40 CooperVision sites and teams created multiple activities to engage employees, drive awareness and generate donations. In addition to sales of cause-branded merchandise, initiatives included artwork auctions, bake sales, jeans days, raffles, barbeques and a World Sight Day walkathon.

“The incredible generosity displayed by our global employees will help to ensure much needed vision care for thousands of adults and children in need,” said Dan McBride, president, CooperVision. “Our record-breaking 2018 World Sight Day Challenge donation represents approximately 52,000 eye exams for people around the world who could otherwise be at risk for a range of vision challenges. The expert care they’ll receive will not only provide near-term benefits, but in many cases a lifetime of greater opportunity through the gift of sight.”

Two Optical Industry Veterans Make Career Moves

He will be replaced by Pete Lothes.

(PRESS RELEASE) BAAR, SWITZERLAND – After 19 successful years with Satisloh, first at the helm of North America and for the last 4 years as global president and group CTO, Larry Clarke takes the opportunity to pursue a new leadership role within Essilor of America. Clarke will become president, Nassau / OOGP and Optical Supplies effective January 1st, 2019. In his new role Clarke will be responsible for a portfolio of companies focusing on contact lenses, stock lenses and optical supplies.

“I am excited for this new challenge and growth opportunity and thrilled to turn over the reins at Satisloh to a successor that is more customer-focused than anyone that I have met in the optical industry,” said Clarke.

With Clarke’s move to his new role, Pete Lothes will become the new global president and CTO of Satisloh, the market leader in optical manufacturing equipment.

Lothes is a veteran of the ophthalmic industry with over 27 years of experience. He joined the industry in 1991 after graduating from college by working in the family retail and wholesale lab businesses in Columbus, Ohio. Shortly after joining the family business, he became president of the wholesale lab. The lab was acquired by Essilor Laboratories of America (ELOA) in 2004 and he continued on as its president until 2009. Later Lothes held various operational executive positions, including vice president of operations, partner labs for ELOA. He joined Satisloh in early 2015 as president of Satisloh North America. During his time there the company achieved multiple years of record sales as well as increased operational efficiencies.

“In my new role, I am looking forward to focusing on the company’s continued passion for bringing the most innovative products and processing solutions, as well as the best customer service, to all of our customers worldwide,” said Lothes.
