Most were clumped in a ‘bluish mass.’

An eyecare provider in the UK found 27 contact lenses in the eye of a patient who had no idea they were there, Optometry Today reports.

The patient, age 67, was about to have cataract surgery when the lenses were discovered. She hadn’t reported any symptoms, although apparently something hadn’t felt quite right.

“She thought her previous discomfort was just part of old age and dry eye,” said Rupal Morjaria, specialist trainee ophthalmologist, according to Optometry Today.

With so many lenses in her eye, doctors would have expected her to experience significant irritation and discomfort. Seventeen of the lenses were stuck together in what was described as a “bluish mass.”

The woman, who was seen at Solihull Hospital, had been wearing monthly disposables for several decades, according to the article. But she hadn’t been seeing an optometrist regularly.

The eyecare providers published a report on the case in the journal BMJ.
