THERE ARE TWO categories of revenue generation — sales and services. Sales includes income from the sale of goods (glasses, CLs, supplements). Services are what is performed by ECPs — exams, procedures, special testing. Ahead of VEW, consider adding equipment to enhance care and office revenue.

Anterior Segment Imaging

Anterior segment images can create a “wow” experience and improve treatment compliance.

  • CPT code 92285 – external ocular photography with interpretation and report. Medicare reimbursement hovers around $23.

Optical Coherence Tomography

OCT testing has become a mainstay in medical eyecare practices. The application across a broad spectrum of ocular diseases (macular degeneration, glaucoma, macular edema, etc.) and accuracy make it a no brainer purchase for businesses.

  • CPT codes are OCT of the optic nerve (92133) and OCT of the retina (92134). Medicare reimbursement is about $36 and $39, respectively.

Fundus Photography

Fantastic for baseline documentation of disease states, although usage may be overutilized for monitoring unchanging conditions. Many offices offer fundus photos as a screening service that patients pay out of pocket for, further boosting office revenue.

  • CPT code 92250 – fundus photography with interpretation and report. Medicare reimbursement is about $36.
