MANAGEMENT If your typical response to handling day-to-day affairs is, “Let me take care of this,” then try this experiment: For the next two weeks free up two hours a day just to manage. Delegate some admin work, drop less important meetings and spend the extra time giving more guidance to your team. You may find the extra productivity far outweighs your “lost” hours.

SECURITY Don’t leave this one another month: Get your passwords in order. You’ve no doubt got dozens of passwords for various apps and services. Take some time to write them down all in one place. Consider using a password manager such as LastPass or 1Password. (As solid as Keychain is, Apple provides its staff with 1Password accounts.)

INVENTORY Start your Mother’s Day (May 11) preparations by going through last year’s data. Compare popular price points with what you have in stock now.

MARKETING What’s going to be your “Hot Summer Offer” in 2025? Invitations to purchase an annual supply of contacts in exchange for free or heavily discounted pairs of sunglasses are common but also effective. What twist can you add to make your promotion stand out?
MAINTENANCE Freestanding practice? It’s time to mow the lawn, trim bushes and plant your annuals. Be sure to inspect sidewalks and driveways to identify areas where people might trip. “This is also a good time to look at maintenance of the physical building (inside and outside) to see what improvements need to happen,” notes Geoff Graham of Lake Country Optometry in Lake Country, BC. Call a contractor if repairs are needed.

TEAM-BUILDING Set up a “Jar of Awesome” in the back room to help your team remember those small wins. The process is simple enough: encourage everyone to write a quick note as soon as something positive happens in your store and drop the paper into a jar. Once a month, read through them with your team for a motivational boost. It’s all too easy to forget the little highlights of working in eyecare.
