Study Shows Multivitamins Can Reduce Risk of Cataracts

Long-term daily use of multivitamins could help to reduce the risk of cataracts, but has no effect on the risk of visually significant age-related macular degeneration, suggests research from a Harvard team. In a study of 14,641 US male physicians aged at least 50 years, the research group found a 9 percent reduced risk of cataracts. “Given that an estimated 10 million adults in the United States have impaired vision due to cataract, even a modest reduction in risk of cataract would have a large public health impact”, said a researcher. Taking daily multivitamins did not have a beneficial effect on the risk of AMD, however.
