YOU DON’T HAVE to be in the optical world long to see the powerful effect a great pair of glasses has. From needing eyewear they weren’t excited about to finding a pair of glasses they’re proud of, the right glasses can transform that person in front of your eyes. Finding a frame with the proper fit, a complimentary color and the perfect vibe does so much more than just make them look good.
It allows the wearer to display more self-confidence. It’s no secret that feeling good brings about a wealth of possibilities: better mood, self-respect, productivity, a heightened outlook on life. We change people’s lives by helping them to see clearly and frame their face in eyewear that improves how they see themselves and, ultimately, how the world sees them. When humans feel this way, the world pays attention. Isn’t it beautiful?
Now I ask you to reflect on something. All of us agree that when you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, opportunities open up. The same way that the eyewear your patient chooses can dampen or elevate their view of themselves, so can the choices you make. Yet nearly half of the optical world attempts to sell this transforming eyewear while wearing scrubs or drab clothing… Before grabbing the pitchforks, hear me out.
I work with hundreds of independent optical Spexy members. I can point to stats from optical teams that have converted from logo T-shirts, vests, or scrubs to fashionable attire and have seen a massive increase in eyewear sales. Many defend their casual dress with, “My patients don’t care what I wear, they come to us for the service.” I am sure your patients do love you, but we have all heard how others have a more positive view of those who portray themselves with style. I want to shift the narrative a bit though. Rather than focusing on how others view us, let’s focus on how we view ourselves.
A 2003 study in the Academy of Management journal, Wearing Your Worth at Work: The Consequences Of Employees’ Daily Clothing Choices, tracked the days of 808 employees and found those who dressed better than usual had a stronger sense of self-esteem and performed better on tasks. Despite what others may think, your own self esteem is elevated and performance greatly improves!

I challenge you to spend a week refining your look and elevating your style. You will notice your productivity and performance increase. Then once you’ve seen the benefits for yourself, call a meeting and challenge your team to do the same.
I have witnessed many independent opticals improve sales by simply leveling up the fashion in the team’s daily attire. Yes, it matters how we portray ourselves to others, but it matters more how an elevated look improves our own sense of worth and productivity.
