The industry “has come a long way.”
In the world of optometry, running an environmentally sustainable practice wasn’t a top priority 20 years ago, says Dr. Sarah Hudson.
Today that’s changed, at least for her business, Harbor Eyecare in Portsmouth, NH, the New Hampshire Business Review reports.
“With each financial decision we make, we ask if we are being more environmentally aware and promoting more sustainability,” she said.
Her practice has made significant upgrades for the sake of efficiency, and it tries to source used or recycled office materials whenever possible, according to the Business Review. It has a recycling program, and it offers a line of MODO Eyewear made primarily from recycled material.

Hudson said that almost two decades ago when she started in optometry, awareness of sustainability issues “didn’t exist” in the field.
Today, she told the Business Review, “The industry has come a long way and now companies are making concentrated efforts to become greener.”
