VA Optometrists Exempt from Federal Hiring Freeze

Optometry jobs within the Department of Veterans Affairs are exempt from a federal hiring freeze announced last month by President Donald Trump.

That’s the word from Robert Snyder, acting secretary of the VA, NorthJersey.com reports.

Optometrist was among several position made exempt “because they are necessary to meet Department of Veterans Affairs public safety responsibilities,” Snyder wrote in a memo dated Jan. 27.

The jobs are located in VA medical centers, health centers and outpatient clinics, he explained.

A variety of other VA positions were exempted, from nurse anesthetist to security guard.

Trump instituted the hiring freeze on Jan. 23.
