This New York OD can be a bit of a control freak.

Jennifer Leuzzi Mill Creek Optical, Dansville, NY

Jenni Leuzzi is a busy woman. “I’m a control freak,” she admits. “I’d be less stressed if I could delegate.” She has four kids whose adventures she checks on daily. She volunteers, loves decorating her shop for seasons and events, and though she loathes it, does her own bookkeeping. She is even hosting a German exchange student for a year this fall. But she has ways to unwind, like spending time with her husband and … her goats. “I have three goats who are pure entertainment first thing every morning, yelling at me until they’re fed.”

Since launching in 2014, INVISION has won 23 international journalism awards for its publication and website. Contact INVISION's editors at editor@invisionmag.com.

Dr. Cheryl Murphy has been practicing for 15 years and currently works at three practices — two ophthalmology practices owned by an MD and one optometry practice — in addition to being a freelance science writer having written for optometric trade journals and blogs like Scientific American and Huffington Post Science. To top it off she is the mother of tween triplets! If there was ever someone who needed to develop some keen unwinding skills, it is her. To do so she consumes lots of iced tea, reads the classics, and spends as much time as possible outside looking for deer and four leaf clovers in the woods behind her house.

And in their downtime it’s dance parties, hitting the slopes and a little hot tub time after hours.

Leigh & Todd Rogers Berberian
Todd Rogers Eyewear Andover, MA

Our 2018 America’s Finest Optical Retailers first place winners may be handing off their baton, but that doesn’t mean they are slowing down. They still provide the best eyecare and eyewear Andover, MA has ever seen. “We think of ourselves as educators,” the couple says. “There’s a tremendous satisfaction in watching the ‘aha’ moment when a client realizes they can see better than they ever have because they have walked through our doors.” And it seems that everyone walks in their doors… “From the police chief to the football coach, the beloved librarian to the favorite dog groomer, and the whole staff of the local pub… ‘Everyone’s famous in a small town…’ and they’re all wearing our glasses.” With a clientele like that, the Berberians sometimes need to unwind. At home that looks like a dance party with the kids. “Nothing beats a good ol’ fashioned kitchen dance off.” And when they can — usually not a busy Saturday in winter – they like to hit the Vermont slopes. “When the four of us are at the top of the mountain together it feels like we’re on top of the world.” And after the kids go to sleep … “Hot tub, just the two of us, under the pines, snow falling, a libation and some slow jams. That’s all we’ll divulge!”

He also knows there is no better way to unwind than with family time and a little wine.

Ryan Corte, OD
Northlake Eye, Charlotte, NC

Dr. Ryan Corte knows how to hustle. Along with being co-owner of Northlake Eye, he is also founder and CEO of IntroWellness, a health and wellness website … and oh, yeah, a dad to a 1 year old. And people like to say millennials are unmotivated. “I really enjoy learning. When you manage your own business, you learn something new every day,” he shares. And his millennial status is a strength when it comes to managing his practice. “I’m in charge of our website and social media content,” he says. “Naturally, I love that!” Not to mention the positive impact he feels his practice has on its patients, staff and community. “It means a lot to me.” His dislikes are the same as any owner/OD: Finding doctor coverage; recruiting, training, and managing staff; and dealing with insurance and managed care. But at the end of the day he has his beautiful young family at home. “Family time. A glass of wine. A good movie or show. A night out,” are all he needs to unwind.
