To help preserve the history of optometry and to honor and study the valuable contributions of ophthalmic experts, the American Optometric Association and Optometry Cares—The AOA Foundation offer volunteer opportunities within the Optometric Historical Society.
The OHS recently elected two members — Ronald R. Ferrucci, O.D., and Bill Sharpton, O.D. — and encourages more practitioners, academics, and others in organized optometry to join the ranks and participate in safeguarding the milestones of their profession.
The purposes of the OHS include encouraging the collection and preservation of materials relating to the history of optometry; assisting in securing and documenting the recollections of those who have participated in the development of optometry; and assisting in the care of archives of optometric interest. The OHS also identifies and marks sites, landmarks, monuments, and structures of significance in optometric development.
The OHS, like the Archives & Museum, is under the auspices of Optometry Cares—The AOA Foundation. The OHS publishes a quarterly history journal, Hindsight, which explores historical topics and pivotal events in the history of the profession, as well as in the AOA.
