VSP Optics Group has entered into a licensing agreement with Sharper Image that will provide the exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute optical-related products under the Sharper Image brand.

This is the first licensed brand for VSP Optics Group and is consistent with VSP’s goal to lead in new product technologies, production processes and innovative supply chain solutions.

“Too often our industry has mistaken complexity for technology. Studies have shown that consumers get lost in this information quagmire and lose sight of the value of their choices,” said Don Oakley, president of VSP Optics Group. “Through our relationship with Sharper Image, we expect to create a new paradigm where simple, high-technology vision systems connect consumer value and the practitioners who service them.”

Sharper Image branded optical products will be available to consumers first through eye care professionals this year and later through multiple channels. The first product to market will be a progressive lens with unique technology features that align with the Sharper Image brand. Together, Sharper Image and VSP Optics Group will develop new products to enhance the lifestyle of today’s consumers.

“We’re excited to partner with VSP and its industry-leading provider network to connect nearly 67 million VSP members with the trusted Sharper Image brand,” said Federico de Bellegarde, senior vice president of Sharper Image.

Eye care professionals interested in offering Sharper Image optical products should visit the VSP Optics Group booth (#22087) at Vision Expo West or visit sharperimageoptics.net for more information.

With 6.6 billion people on the planet in need of vision correction by 2050, of which 5 billion will be affected by the myopia epidemic, taking action without delay is key. Even though a pair of eyeglasses can answer most of the world’s vision needs, the lack of access to and awareness of vision care remains overall too low, both in mature and developing countries. Hence, Essilor is committed to continue driving innovation across the market, establishing access points for everyone everywhere, while driving greater awareness and advocacy for good vision.

Over the years, the Group has also significantly accelerated its efforts to fight uncorrected poor vision, the world’s largest disability, affecting 2.5 billion people today, of which 90% live in base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) economies. To do so, it has expanded its three-pronged approach, based on awareness, inclusive business and philanthropy.

A pillar of Essilor’s engagement to drive the strategy for inclusive business across the world, its 2.5 New Vision Generation (2.5 NVG) inclusive business division and BoP Innovation Lab aim to satisfy the specific needs of rural consumers by driving innovation throughout the whole value chain – from business models to products to technology to financing.

With the help of more than 600 partners – from governments to NGOs to corporates – 2.5 NVG and the BoP Innovation Lab have enabled access to a pair of glasses for more than 25 million people across 62 countries in need of vision correction, and empowered nearly 12,000 micro-entrepreneurs to set up their own businesses, providing sustainable access to vision care to 250 million people.

Hubert Sagnières, Chairman of Essilor, declared: “We receive Fortune’s award with pride and responsibility. This distinction is a tremendous endorsement, as we are building a sustainable business model to solve a global problem at scale.

We are committed to achieving our ambition to eradicate poor vision: as an industry leader, we believe it is our duty to continue pushing the boundaries of optical solutions; all of Essilor’s employees, from leadership to shop floor, share and live this ambition.

Following our recent combination with Luxottica, we are now the industry leader across optical products and instruments, with an even larger platform and greater scale to achieve our goal.”

Texas State Optical Elects New Board Leadership

It’s effective since July 1, 2019.

(PRESS RELEASE) HOUSTON,TX — The doctors of Texas State Optical announce the election of its board of directors and board officers, effective July 1, 2019. The following TSO board members will serve as the organization’s reappointed officers: Dr. Phong Pham of Houston, Texas; Dr. Leigha Nielsen of New Braunfels, Texas; Dr. Stephen Stanfield of San Marcos, Texas and non-shareholder Mr. C. Edward Buffington of Rancho Cordova, California. Elected to board of directors chairman position is Dr. Reid Robertson, past committee chairman of the Nomination Committee of Allen, Texas.

“I am honored and excited to serve as the Chair of the Board for Texas State Optical. Our network is like no other in the ophthalmic world. Our former Vision Quest has aptly been renamed the TSO Family Reunion to celebrate our unique organization. We truly are like a family which works together to support one another. Our strength comes from our doctors and our ability to leverage our power as a group to do more than any single optometrist can do. I am continually grateful for the strength that TSO provides for each of us. I hope to fortify our group for the future,” said TSO Chairman of the Board Dr. Reid Robertson.

“TSO Network is pleased to formally announce the inauguration of its new Board of Directors and Officers. We thank these dedicated and talented professionals for contributing their valuable time and expertise on behalf of the Doctors of TSO. Our Board members have been in the TSO Network for under a decade. We are geared to embrace the future changes of the profession with their leadership. We are especially honored to have Mr. Jack Gunion, Dr. Mark Wright, and Mr. C. Edward Buffington continue as non-shareholders on our board,” said John Marvin, president of TSO.

In 2014, the TSO Board decided to dedicate three board positions to professionals in the industry from outside of the group of TSO shareholders. These board positions provide the organization with an outside and more national perspective of the optometry and optical industries.

Each year at the TSO Annual Shareholder Family Reunion Conference, the board elections results are announced. Formerly known as the Vision Quest Conference, Texas State Optical’s annual meeting was renamed to recognize the cultural dynamic that makes Texas State Optical different than all other eye care organizations.

When asked, members of Texas State Optical say they value most the feeling of belonging one big family in the TSO Network. They value the camaraderie with other eye doctors and observe their staff has a sense of belonging to something more substantial than just a practice.

For the first time in a decade, the conference reconvened in Texas at the Lost Pines Resort in Lost Pines, Texas. The Family Reunion Conference welcomed 81% of the TSO Network’s shareholders to the conference, alongside over 400 staff and vendors.

“This year’s conference reflected what truly makes Texas State Optical a different and special organization. TSO is a family, and that family is not only a family of optometrists and their families. It includes staff members and their families. It also includes our vendor partners and their families. It just made sense to rebrand our annual meeting the Texas State Optical Family Reunion,” said John D. Marvin, president, and CEO.

TSO’s Board of Directors and Officers will continue to oversee the long-term strategic plan for TSO, enabling the Doctors of TSO to advance their mission, vision and strategic objectives to become Texan’s first choice in eye care.
