Words Matter … Especially When Some Can Potentially Cause Discomfort

Sometimes its just semantics and sometimes a clearer way of phrasing things can cause less embarrassment.

I learned very early to ask customers trying out their new bifocals if they could see the smallest letters on the reading card. On one of my first experiences as an apprentice in the rural South, I asked an old farmer if he could “read the card.” He said, “No.” At my look of concern, he explained “but I ain’t ever been able to read.” Ahh.
