Helping children on World Sight Day

World Sight Day is October 12 

Optometry Giving Sight has kicked off its major fundraising campaign of the year, the World Sight Day Challenge. The Challenge runs through October, with World Sight Day held on Oct. 12. As part of its support for Our Children’s Vision, Optometry Giving Sight will fund projects that improve sight in more than 1 million children in 2017. For 10 years, optometrists, patients, students and the industry have taken the Challenge by making tax-deductible donations and raising funds in their practice, school or company. New Ads From Think About Your Eyes 

Think About Your Eyes has debuted a new awareness campaign. Begun the week of July 31, it features two new commercials and is the first new creative since the campaign’s launch in 2007. The ads aim to celebrate sight, connecting on an emotional level.

Lab Division Honors

The Lab Division of The Vision Council has named Marty Bassett, president and CEO of Walman Optical Co., the 2017 recipient of the Directors’ Choice Award. Hall of Fame Inductees include: John Art, Interstate Optical; Lorinda Fraboni, Walman Optical; James Goerges, Precision Tool Technologies, Inc.; William H. Heffner, III, FEA Industries, Inc.; Lawrence Lahr, Eye-Kraft Optical, Inc.; Mark Mattison-Shupnick, Sola, Jobson, MMS Consulting; Drake McLean, Dietz-McLean Optical; and Joe Vitale, Essilor of America, Inc. All will be honored at a celebration on Sept. 13 in conjunction with Vision Expo West.

Bonnie Strickland Award Winner Announced

Prevent Blindness and the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness announced the winner of the third “Bonnie Strickland Champion for Children’s Vision Award.” This year’s recipient is Sean P. Donahue, MD, Ph.D., professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Vanderbilt University. The award recognizes efforts to improve children’s vision and eye health at the state or national level. Dr. Donahue was selected for his efforts to improve children’s vision through stakeholder engagement, volunteer coordination, and advancement of vision screening technology.

Polaroid Given Legacy Award

The Accessories Council held its 21st Annual ACE Awards Aug. 7 in New York City. During the black-tie gala, Safilo’s Polaroid Eyewear brand received the Legacy Award in honor of its 80th anniversary. Elliott Sailors, a model and Polaroid brand ambassador, presented the award to Henri Blomqvist, CEO of Safilo North America. Guests were treated to a presentation of Polaroid sunglasses distributed cigarette-girl style via branded trays.
