Optometrist Sees Last Patient of Career, and It’s a Visit He’ll Never Forget

Optometrist Steven Silberberg recently retired after 40 years of working in Monmouth County, NJ, and the final patient of his career was one he won’t forget any time soon.

On Dec. 28, Silberberg’s last patient was Edward DeNoble, the Asbury Park Press reports. DeNoble was also the first patient of Silberberg’s career when he started in 1979.

When DeNoble called in to get on the schedule, Silberberg’s staff decided to put him in the last slot of the day as a tribute of sorts.

DeNoble, 78, said, “We followed him everywhere he went and always had a good relationship, we were like friends.” He was always impressed by Silberberg’s eyecare skills.

Silberberg, 67, started his career at Lincroft Vision Center and in 1986 began practicing in Matawan, according to the Asbury Park Press.

He said of DeNoble: “Every year he comes back or if he needs to be here more frequently, and we laugh about it every year. He has become a friend.”

Silberberg was good at retaining patients over the long haul. In recent years, most of his appointments each day were with people who’d been coming to him for 25 years of more.
