Custom Stable Vision Project Lowers the Economic Barrier to Scleral Lenses

Cost is often a barrier.

(Press Release) SPRINGFIELD, OR – Valley Contax, a custom contact lens manufacturer, recently launched the Custom Stable Vision Project. Many eyecare professionals struggle to fit patients in scleral lenses due to the higher up-front costs compared to traditional GP and soft lenses. Scleral lenses are often the best option for patients, but many cannot afford them and so choose a solution that is less than optimal. Such was the case for a 17-year-old patient of Dr. Ross J. Chatwin, an optometrist at Sugar House Vision in Salt Lake City, UT.

Chatwin’s patient, “TP,” was diagnosed with keratoconus last year and was given the choice between scleral lenses or GP contact lenses. TP opted for the less expensive GP lenses but was unhappy with the comfort they provided and experienced fluctuating vision. Because of these ongoing vision problems, TP fell behind in school and struggled with many everyday tasks. At his annual exam, TP reported that he had not worn his GP lenses in three months and had actually lost one of them. He was very interested in alternative treatments but his finances were very limited and so scleral lenses were not an option.

In early 2017, Chatwin noticed that Valley Contax had announced its Custom Stable Vision Project. This initiative allows practitioners to submit a simple online application to help economically challenged patients in need of Custom Stable scleral lenses. The program provides discounts to qualifying patients of up to 85 percent off Custom Stable lenses. By partnering with other industry donors, Valley Contax has been able to allocate $10,000 per year for the project.

With a better option for TP now available, Chatwin submitted his patient as a Custom Stable Vision Project prospect and the application was accepted. As a result, TP is very happy with his vision and the improved comfort of his Custom Stable lenses. He is now driving, connecting better with friends and family and eagerly looking forward to successfully completing his high school education.

Our goal as a company is to be more than a custom lens manufacturer – it’s to make a better world through vision. TP’s story is inspiring, and we’re proud we were able to be a part of it. We hope to see many more successes just like this one in the years ahead.”
