A Podcast, a Zoom, and Awards Among the Latest from the Lighthouse Guild

The latest edition of the Lighthouse Guild podcast “On Tech and Vision with Dr. Cal Roberts” is available.

Jay Cormier, President and CEO of Eyedaptic, is featured on the episode. Eyedaptic specializes in vision-enhancement technology. In particular, the company’s flagship product, the EYE5, is geared toward helping individuals with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other low-vision diseases.

Dr. JR Rizzo, a professor and researcher of medicine and engineering at NYU, also makes an appearance. Dr. Rizzo talks about a wearable “backpack” navigation system he and his research team are developing.

The new episode is titled: Concept to Reality: Developing Big Ideas for Accessible Technology for People with Vision Loss. It is available online at Lighthouseguild.org and for downloading on Apple Music, Spotify, Google Podcasts iHeartRadio Podcasts and Tunein.com.

Dr. Calvin W. Roberts, MD, is President & CEO of Lighthouse Guild. He is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College. He formerly was Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Eye Care, at Bausch Health Companies.

Dr. Gerra holds a Doctorate in Blindness and Visual Impairment and a Master’s in Early Childhood Development. She’s been a longtime program administrator of programs for children and young adults with visual impairment at Lighthouse Guild in New York City. As a teacher, Dr. Gerra has taught visually impaired children of all ages.

Awards

Lighthouse Guild recently hosted its 2023 lecture and awards ceremony. The event recognized outstanding accomplishments in vision science, technological innovation, and advocacy.

  • Dr. Wiley A. Chambers was awarded The Alfred W. Bressler Prize for Outstanding Advancements in Vision Science.
  • Mr. Saquib Shaikh earned The Pisart Award in Technological Innovation.
  • Former U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, was named the recipient of The Dr. Allen R. Morse Lecture in Advocacy.
